How does the mission work? How should you play the mission?

In each game in Event Horizon, there are 3 tiered mission and VP as the last decider. For example, you can win a game by winning the Primary mission, or drawing on primary and win on secondary.

The tiered missions are,
  • 5 Objectives (centre of table and centre of each quarter)
  • Table quarters (using VP to determine who holds a quarter)
  • Kill Points (win by 3 KP or more)
These missions are rotated around with deployment to create a familiar, yet different environment each game.

The following is my suggestion on how you should tackle each mission to maximise the strength of your army.

5 Objectives

This mission favours msu (multiple small units) armies and fast armies where they can tank shock you off objectives, or contest late in the game and win by a small margin.

To win this mission, you will only need to hold 2 objectives and contest 2 others, or hold 1 and contest the rest, but it is harder. Therefore, if you are not as fast as your opponent (or if they are msu), you will need to determine which 2 objectives you will hold and push your opponent away with the rest of your army.

Be mindful that the 2 objectives closest to your table edge are not always the best 2 to hold.

Table Quarters

This mission compares the amount of VP in each quarter to determine which player holds the quarter, with Scoring Units counts their full VP no matter the damage taken. E.g. I have 5 Terminators (200vp) vs your rhino (35vp), I will hold the quarter.

At first glance people might say this favours msu and fast armies, but in fact this mission favours elite (tough) armies, troop heavy armies, and armies which can hold the middle of the board.

The reason this mission favours elite armies is because they can sit in the middle of the board, take the punishment and push into any quarter at the end. Troop heavy armies also gains a benefit because Scoring Units will count their full VP even down to one man. So go to ground if you have to, to save that last marine.

To win this mission, you will need to be near the centre and control your opponent. Move into the quarters as late as possible and make sure they could not bring in enough to stop you.

If you are not a "centre of board" army (eg. Eldar, DE), you will need to be close or fast enough to get to the required quarters at the end.

You will need a 3-1 quarters to win this mission, there is no other way.

Kill Points

A straight KP mission which requires you to win by 3 or more kill points. Most people believe this mission will favour KP denial armies.

Why 3 or more kills points? Because 4 or more is too hard (over 50% draw games) and 2 or more is too little (about 20% of getting a draw). To win by 3 or more, a player would be winning because of skills and tactics not just pure luck.

To win this mission there are few things to consider,
  • Always clean up, focus fire - do not leave one or two model lying around
  • Attack the weak kill points
  • Protect your weak kill points - give it cover, hold it in reserve, go to ground, etc
Always keep in mind where you can take KPs and where you will give away KPs. The player who protects their KPs the best will likely be the winner.

Going first or second?

In general, Objectives and Table Quarters favours going second while Kill Points favours going first. To balance this, the game will randomly end on turn 5, 6, or 7 so the second player must commit from turn 5.

Summary

Hopefully this will give you some insight into the missions, and how to win or draw each of them. Remember, if the Primary does not suit your army, you can always try to draw the mission and win on Secondary, or even Tertiary.

  1. Table quarter missions are so midfield centric it's insane. And awesome. Being able to have most of your army work effectively in the centre of the brain and as the game moves on, move a small margin and claim any TQ? effective.
