Once you read the missions you will notice that it is a combination of 4 sets of objectives combined in different way for each game.
Why the games and missions were designed this way and what do I hope to achieve?
Simple
I believe the missions should challenge the players but easy to understand and should not detract players from playing the game itself. Like many games we play, the victory conditions are simple (kick a goal, score a try). It is the tactics and strategy between yourself and your opponent that makes it fun and interesting.
Balance
Missions should create an equal chance to win for both players regardless of their army build. There is no “fun” going into a game and know that you have won or loss before a die is thrown.
To make the game balance, we have used objectives that are different but draw-able. Each mission favours some army type over another (unavoidable), and by putting them together at different tiers it allows a smart player to win the game by drawing the first tier mission and win via the second or the third tier mission.
This minimise the imbalance if we were to play with a single mission in the game.
Competitive (not just luck)
Missions should have minimal randomness. I have had great games with great players that left us both wide eyed because of some random event in the mission destroyed a player’s chance of winning. It was fun (and funny when it happened) but not competitive.
Challenge
Missions are similar but always different; it requires detail planning but does not overwhelm you with details; focus on player’s skill and not just luck of the draw (or dice).
This is what I hope to achieve for all the people who like a game of 40k.
