Terrains in Event Horizon

The format of the terrain in Event Horizon should be roughly similar from table to table.
If you believe the terrain has been materially altered, contact a judge!
For reference, each table should have one terrain piece near the centre of the board, one in each table quarter, and possibly some additional small pieces scattered about.
For Event Horizon, terrains are placed as follows:
  • The table should have roughly 7 pieces of terrain, covering approximately 25% of the table, with most or all of it having some “area” component
  • At least three pieces of terrain should have significant line of sight blocking components, with some even capable of blocking full line of sight to a vehicle or monstrous creature similar to a carnifex, rhino, or even land raider and leman russ.
  • One larger pieces of line of sight blocking area terrain should be roughly placed at the centre of the table. One other large pieces of area terrain should be placed in each table quarter. A couple of smaller pieces might be used in the larger gaps of open space on the table. Placement would be roughly equal regardless of deployment type or side chosen.
Practicing with terrain roughly set in this fashion will help you prepare for Event Horizon. While we will have a very wide variety of terrain pieces from table to table, the placement of the terrain will be roughly similar on all tables.

How does the mission work? How should you play the mission?

In each game in Event Horizon, there are 3 tiered mission and VP as the last decider. For example, you can win a game by winning the Primary mission, or drawing on primary and win on secondary.

The tiered missions are,
  • 5 Objectives (centre of table and centre of each quarter)
  • Table quarters (using VP to determine who holds a quarter)
  • Kill Points (win by 3 KP or more)
These missions are rotated around with deployment to create a familiar, yet different environment each game.

The following is my suggestion on how you should tackle each mission to maximise the strength of your army.

5 Objectives

This mission favours msu (multiple small units) armies and fast armies where they can tank shock you off objectives, or contest late in the game and win by a small margin.

To win this mission, you will only need to hold 2 objectives and contest 2 others, or hold 1 and contest the rest, but it is harder. Therefore, if you are not as fast as your opponent (or if they are msu), you will need to determine which 2 objectives you will hold and push your opponent away with the rest of your army.

Be mindful that the 2 objectives closest to your table edge are not always the best 2 to hold.

Table Quarters

This mission compares the amount of VP in each quarter to determine which player holds the quarter, with Scoring Units counts their full VP no matter the damage taken. E.g. I have 5 Terminators (200vp) vs your rhino (35vp), I will hold the quarter.

At first glance people might say this favours msu and fast armies, but in fact this mission favours elite (tough) armies, troop heavy armies, and armies which can hold the middle of the board.

The reason this mission favours elite armies is because they can sit in the middle of the board, take the punishment and push into any quarter at the end. Troop heavy armies also gains a benefit because Scoring Units will count their full VP even down to one man. So go to ground if you have to, to save that last marine.

To win this mission, you will need to be near the centre and control your opponent. Move into the quarters as late as possible and make sure they could not bring in enough to stop you.

If you are not a "centre of board" army (eg. Eldar, DE), you will need to be close or fast enough to get to the required quarters at the end.

You will need a 3-1 quarters to win this mission, there is no other way.

Kill Points

A straight KP mission which requires you to win by 3 or more kill points. Most people believe this mission will favour KP denial armies.

Why 3 or more kills points? Because 4 or more is too hard (over 50% draw games) and 2 or more is too little (about 20% of getting a draw). To win by 3 or more, a player would be winning because of skills and tactics not just pure luck.

To win this mission there are few things to consider,
  • Always clean up, focus fire - do not leave one or two model lying around
  • Attack the weak kill points
  • Protect your weak kill points - give it cover, hold it in reserve, go to ground, etc
Always keep in mind where you can take KPs and where you will give away KPs. The player who protects their KPs the best will likely be the winner.

Going first or second?

In general, Objectives and Table Quarters favours going second while Kill Points favours going first. To balance this, the game will randomly end on turn 5, 6, or 7 so the second player must commit from turn 5.

Summary

Hopefully this will give you some insight into the missions, and how to win or draw each of them. Remember, if the Primary does not suit your army, you can always try to draw the mission and win on Secondary, or even Tertiary.

Four ways to win Event Horizon

Event Horizon provide tournament participants with four different ways of achieving top honours. Each of the awards are equal in value and follows our believe that each aspect of the hobby should be rewarded equally.

There are four top awards on offer,
  • Best Overall "Tri-Man" Award
  • Best General "Knights Champion" Award
  • Best Painting "Master of the Art" Award
  • Best Sportsman "White Knight" Award

Tri-Man
The Tri-Man is the Best Overall award that people are familiar with going to 40k tournaments.

Best overall consist of 37.5% Battle Points, 25% sportsman and 37.5% Painting score. To be the Tri-Man, you will need to have a nicely painted army, be a nice person, and win more games than losses. Dropping a game or two is unlikely to have a major impact to your chance at the Tri-Man.

Knights Champion

The Knights Champion is the Best General award via a qualifier and semi knock out format. The Knights Champion is to award the best and consistent 40k player during the weekend, and he will likely to have a 6-0 record to proof it.

At the end of Day 1, the top 4 or 8 players (depending on total number of players) will be drafted into a play off for Knights Champion. Players with a 3/0 record and highest 2/1 record (with highest BP) would be included to make the top 4 or 8.

In Day 2, the drafted players will play against each other in a knock out style format. The player to be undefeated will be crowned the Knights Champion.

Players which are knocked out in day 2 are still eligible for the Tri-Man award.

Master of the Art

Master of the Art is the best painted award for players who had painted/converted each of their model.

To determine the best painter, we have incorporated the Army Painter and Model Painter in the marking criteria. 100 points will be awarded to the painting of the army and another 100 points will be awarded to a single model which will incorporate painting and conversion.

To win this award, the person must truly be a Master of the Art.

White Knight

White Knight is the best sportsman who will be smiling through think and thin. It is likely that you will still be laughing even when he is trouncing your army.

To determine the sportsman score, there is a simple check box scoring at the end of each game. At the end of each day, players will be required to nominate one player they had played on the day as the best sportsman. The player with the highest score will be crowned the White Knight.

How to do your best in Event Horizon

How to do your best

If you want to do your best in Event Horizon, I have some suggestions that could get you those extra points.

Painting
  1. Make sure all your models are painted.
  2. Bases - make sure you Sergeants, Heros, etc are on nice bases and stand out from the group. Use Back to Bases-ix or Iron Halo bases if you do not want to make your own bases.
  3. Painting - once you have painted your army (PREREQUISITE) spend some more time to give your models highlight and shadings. Your army will look great and it dramatically increase your painting score .
  4. Have a display board/fluffy banner/cool objectives - this will be the easiest points you can earn and it will be useful in the future.
  5. Make sure you have one special model that you have put in the effort, eg. Special character, Commander, Tyrant, etc. Because we will ask you to nominate one of your model for the single model category.

Sportsmanship
  1. Respect others
  2. Control your emotions - just because the dice are not going your way, does not mean you can throw dice or yell at people.
  3. Play clean, don't cheat - your integrity is more important than a game of mandollies, remember that.

Battle
  1. Practice the missions
  2. Practice against other armies
  3. Practice using other armies
  4. Read and remember all the rules and codexes

Event Horizon - Player pack v1.7

Hello all,

Player Pack Version 1.7 is uploaded, and this should be the final version.

I have updated the table quarter missions to place more importance on Scoring Units by counting their full VP no matter the amount of damaged they suffered.

Minor shuffle with the missions and calculation of VP now matches with p300 of the BRB.
